Solidworks is a 3D CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and CAE (Computer-Aided Engineering) software package designed for manufacturing engineering and product design. The program has been in development since 1982 and was originally branded as CAD/CAM/CAE software, but the company changed the name in 2006 to SolidWorks Corporation. The software is available for Microsoft Windows, Linux, Mac OS X running on Intel x86-64 systems with AMD64 or PAUSED operating system support. SolidWorks allows single and double-sided, 2D and 3D design. The software has support for parametric data and can be used to create solid models, mechanical drawings or parts lists. For example, the part can then be created in a modeling application such as Autodesk Inventor for further processing. The integrated parts library contains over 30 million part designs from over 1000 manufacturers which include CAD data such as dimensions, features and internal clearances. Part information is stored in the database so that it is available even if the application is not running. SolidWorks first modeled surfaces using physical models consisting of equations to describe them. Since 1992, SolidWorks has included the ability to model surfaces with Curaçao Cura. SolidWorks has the ability to create surfaces with 3-D surfacing. SolidWorks is one of only two 3D CAD/CAM/CAE applications capable of modeling curved parts without mesh or surface-modeling extensions. The other is Creo Elements/Pro which began development in 1993. Creo Elements/Pro is generally more expensive than SolidWorks but offers more features and a larger user community. There are a number of third-party integration modules available for SolidWorks, each providing additional functionality. The SolidWorks Add-on Toolkit is a web-based application that allows SolidWorks users to access and download specialized integration and utility modules and applications, and test them out through an online interface before installing them. It also allows users to share those modules with others online. The Add-On Toolkit was introduced in 2004 as a free tool for non-producers, but was later made available as a paid service for Producers as well. In 2006, the Add-On Toolkit was made available to all SolidWorks users. There are now over 500,000 registered users who have downloaded more than 500,000 modules from the Add-On Toolkit since its inception. On March 8, 2009, SolidWorks released its online community Web Services API. This web service enables other applications to read or write data to or from SolidWorks using web service calls to the API. SolidWorks software is available in several editions. The former Student and Home editions were discontinued after 2011 and replaced with the e-NASCAR version. There are nine 'Platinum' versions of SolidWorks that include additional functionality beyond that of the 'Professional'. These versions are aimed towards specific industries or applications, such as aerospace design (SolidWorks Aerospace) and ship design (SolidWorks Marine). cfa1e77820
